Euphyllia coral general care

Euphyllia corals, commonly known as hammer corals, torch corals, and frogspawn corals, are popular choices for reef tanks due to their captivating appearance and relatively easy care requirements. Here are the key parameters and care tips for Euphyllia corals:

Water Parameters:

1. Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)

2. Salinity: 1.024-1.026 specific gravity

3. pH: 8.1-8.4

4. Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH (143-215 ppm)

5. Calcium: 400-450 ppm

6. Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm

7. Nitrate: <10 ppm is ideal, though they can tolerate slightly higher levels.

8. Phosphate: <0.03 ppm is preferred to avoid algae growth, but Euphyllia can tolerate a bit higher.

Lighting:

- Type: Moderate to high lighting, though they can adapt to a range of lighting conditions.

- Intensity: Typically, a PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) level of around 150-300 μmol/m²/s is suitable.

- Spectrum: A balanced spectrum with blues and whites is optimal, usually achieved with LED lights or T5 bulbs.

Flow:

- Euphyllia corals prefer moderate water flow. Too strong a current can cause stress and damage, while too little flow can lead to poor health and reduced growth.

Placement:

- Place in a position where they can expand fully without being crowded by other corals. Keep in mind that Euphyllia species can have long sweeper tentacles that may harm nearby corals. Some Euphyllia will tolerate high flow, keep an eye on flesh band and recession of tissue

Feeding:

- Euphyllia corals can benefit from target feeding with small marine foods such as zooplankton, mysis shrimp, or specially formulated coral foods several times a week. Though they primarily rely on photosynthesis, additional feeding can enhance their growth and coloring
